Keeping Families Safely in Their Homes
Essential home repair improves quality of life, preserves affordable housing, and prevents displacement and homelessness. Since 1988, Mountain Housing Opportunities (MHO) has provided more than 5,580 health and safety-related home repairs to local, low-income homeowners. Behind each of those repairs is a story of a person, or sometimes an entire family, whose home was saved.
Today, MHO’s Essential Home Repair program helps vulnerable homeowners in Buncombe County remain safely in their homes, serving more than 200 low-income households each year. Supported by a 2025 IMPACT Grant, the program provides no-cost critical repairs for low-income older adults, individuals with disabilities, and single-parent households.
As recovery continues following Tropical Storm Helene, the need for safe and stable housing remains high. MHO addresses urgent repairs including roofing, plumbing, electrical work, heating systems, and accessibility improvements such as ramps and grab bars – preserving naturally occurring affordable housing for some of Buncombe County’s most vulnerable residents.
