Retiring CEO Awarded NC Governor’s Highest Honor

On October 16, 2025, retiring CEO, Scott Buchanan of WNC Bridge Foundation, received one of North Carolina’s most prestigious civilian honors, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine. Presented by board member Liz Cozart during his retirement celebration, the award recognizes individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions to the state and their communities. Established in 1963, it remains the highest honor bestowed by the Governor of North Carolina for exemplary service and exceptional accomplishments.

Scott’s impact on Western North Carolina spans across decades and sectors. After military service and several years as an educator, he moved to Asheville and began a distinguished career in healthcare. His leadership roles at Thoms Rehabilitation Hospital and later at CarePartners Foundation helped strengthen rehabilitation services and expand support for communities across the region. Under his guidance, CarePartners broadened its outreach, increased scholarship opportunities for students pursuing health careers, and championed programs that improved care for seniors and families.

Following the 2019 sale of Mission Health, Scott led the transformation of CarePartners Foundation into the WNC Bridge Foundation, reshaping its mission to reach all counties in Western North Carolina and the Qualla Boundary. He empowered his team to build an equitable grantmaking process, expanded support for local families, and partnered with regional, federal, and private organizations to address needs ranging from food insecurity to rural healthcare access. He also ensured the continuation of the Rathbun House, a hospitality house supporting families of NICU and out-of-area patients.

Scott’s leadership was especially evident following Hurricane Helene, when he coordinated with Dogwood Health Trust and the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina to create a unified and efficient regional response. His quick action helped launch expedited grant programs and the Hurricane Helene Relief Fund, supporting 88 organizations and awarding $1.4 million for Hurricane Helene support.  Under Scott’s leadership, WNC Bridge Foundation also opened its doors to the American Red Cross and state officials, providing a safe space for meetings with families grieving loved ones lost in the storm.

Scott Buchanan’s legacy reaches far beyond his extensive service at WNC Bridge Foundation. His decades of leadership, compassion, and commitment to the wellbeing of Western North Carolina have made a profound and lasting impact. With the awarding of The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, Scott’s name joins a distinguished list of North Carolina leaders whose dedication has strengthened communities and enriched the lives of countless residents across the state.
